Wildflowers

06/05/2021

We are keen to increase the biodiversity of the park by increasing the number of flowering species on site.  To help with this, we are creating a wildflower meadow in the back corner of the park.  We left it uncut at the beginning of May, dropped some bee bombs and scattered a small amount of wildflower seeds.  Wildflowers don't like fertile ground and are easily crowded out by grass, so we are probably not going to see much success from the seeds.  To help counter this, we cultivated some wildflower seeds in trays and planted them out as small plugs.  Hopefully this will give them a helping hand to get established.  We will do this again later in the year.   We don't have the resources right now to create a new meadow from scratch so this is a bit of an experiment and may take a few years to get established.

From the information on the packet of seeds, we have hopefully planted some phacelia, borage, nigella, eschschlozia, larkspur, cornflower, chrysanthemum, calendula and cosmos.

There naturally, we seem to have clover, daisy, buttercup, thistle, wild poppy nearby, several different grasses and some other unknown plants - answers on a postcard please!
