About Us

The community group Friends of Douglas Park (FoDP) was created in May 2016 in order to secure Douglas Park as a community resource for many years to come.

The group was initially formed as a sub-committee of Cambuslang Community Council; however, the intention was that the group would evolve to a charitable body in its own right prior to taking on any responsibility for the park.    An application was submitted to the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) in March 2016 for the organisation to become a single tier Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO).  This application was approved, and FoDP came into being on the 18th May 2016.  Subsequent to its formation it became apparent that a single tier SCIO setup for FoDP was not ideal and consequently, the charity amended its constitution on 6th July 2017 to bring the body into a two-tier SCIO setup (providing the benefits of a more transparent organisational structure and defined membership that this brings).

Our aims

As a registered SCIO, we are governed by a constitution and have a number of charitable purposes which we aim to achieve.  Our main purposes are:

  • To restore Douglas Park to a well-tended park and open space for the benefit of the community for use by all,  thereby encouraging increased community use, leading to the improvement and development of community spirit in Douglas Park.
  • To conserve, enhance and improve the biodiversity and sustainable use of Douglas Park for the benefit of people and wildlife.
  • To encourage health and environmental engagement as part of the network of green open spaces in Cambuslang.
  • To create a sense of space and place in the community with an intelligent viewpoint detailing the local landmarks, landmarks of the wider Glasgow area and surrounding mountains.
  • To provide a resource, in the form of Douglas Park, for the use of other community groups and in furtherance of their aims and objectives in so far as those aims and objectives are not in conflict with the aims and objectives of the Organisation.
  • To advance the education of the adjacent primary school pupils concerning the natural environment through the development of horticultural programmes.
  • In furtherance thereof, but not otherwise, the Organisation shall seek to protect, preserve and enhance the environmental asset of Douglas Park with the object of improving the conditions of life for the community by promoting health, community engagement and the benefits of enjoying green space.
